Substance use disorders (SUDs) are among the most complex, costly, and stigmatized chronic medical conditions worldwide. In the United States, addiction affects brain function, physical health, mental well‑being, family systems, employment, and community safety. According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 48.4 million Americans aged 12 and older, approximately 1 in 6 people, met criteria for a substance use disorder in the past year. Of these individuals, 27.9 million had alcohol use disorder (AUD) and 28.2 million had at least one drug use disorder, with significant overlap between the two categories.
